How to Use Trekking Poles is really pretty simple and starts with reading the instructions that came with your hiking poles.
Adding hiking trekking poles or nordic walking poles to your hiking gear checklist is an excellent way to increase your fitness level, increase your stability and balance when you are hiking and take some of the stress off of your joints, especially the knees when hiking downhill.
Using hiking poles is quite easy, but can take a bit of practise, so do so at home before hitting the trails.
Before you head out, adjust the length of your hiking poles so that your forearms are parallel to the ground when you are holding the grips and the tips of your hiking trekking poles are on the ground. Your elbow should be at a 90 degree angle.
Use the wrist straps. Slip your hand underneath the strap and lightly grip the hand hold. Adjust the strap if necessary, you do not want a tight strap on your hand.
Get into a comfortable rhythm of walking using your hiking poles. Walk as you normally do, planting the trekking pole in front of you as place your foot.
Adjust the length of your hiking trekking poles as often as your terrain changes.
How to use your trekking poles when hiking uphill is easy. Simply adjust the length about 1-2 inches shorter, more if the slope is very steep. You will gain more power with each step this way.
When hiking downhill lengthen your hiking poles to take additional strain off your knees and give you additional balance.
All hiking poles should have numbers along the shaft showing the length. Use these numbers as reference for adjusting the height of your trekking poles.
