Kids Rain Gear

The best kids rain gear for family camping will keep your little ones dry from head to toe.

Family camping in the rain can really put a damper on things so you need to have a "rainy day" plan.

Reading and making crafts in your family tent is a great idea but it's easy to get cabin fever.

Packing the right kids outerwear should include kids rain boots or waterproof kids hiking boots and waterproof clothing to cover them from head to toe.

Having some of your kids outdoor toys that can be played with in the rain is a good idea too. Frisbees, rubber balls even bike riding on the trails can be done in the rain. Float some toys or sticks in the lake or stream and when the sun does come back out get ready to stash your kids rain gear and pull out a homemade solar oven for kids for some great fun after a rainy day.

The best kids rain gear to pack with the kids camping clothes and outdoor hiking gear includes 3 important items:

Kids rain jacket-make sure there is a hood attached and a nice feature on a kids rain jacket is having draw cords for the hood to prevent it from always falling off.

Kids rain pants -pull on with an elastic waistline and cuffs around the ankles are great to have.

Kids rain boots or waterproof hiking shoes-rubber boots are great but little feet can get cold without any insulation. Pack along some warm camping socks like merino wool socks (yes, they are becoming affordable, even for kids and are well worth it.)

Wet, soggy kids are not happy campers or hikers!

Kids like to get dirty, play in water and splash in puddles, it's just in their nature. So let them! If it's a bit chilly out, layer them with a fleece jacket underneath. Let them play and have fun!

Pull the kids rain pants over top of kids rain boots to keep the rain and mud away from their feet.

Even on day hikes we pack along our rain jackets just in case of foul weather. And you don't need to bring rain boots if you have waterproof kids hiking boots or waterproof hiking shoes for them.

While I don't think it's necessary to purchase Gore-Tex for growing kids, I do highly recommend checking out REI for their really awesome rain gear for kids.

No matter what type of weather you think you'll encounter on your family outdoor get-away, always, always prepare for it all!

Bring rain gear along, even if it doesn't rain but they encounter water or want to wade into ponds and streams. Kids are natural explorers and getting wet can be half the fun.

Happy camping!
